Minnie Evans Tribute – Beautiful Art, Beautiful Surroundings
Inspiration is never far away! Green Day at Airlie Gardens in Wilmington, North Carolina held in honor of Minnie Evans was a huge success. Combining what is regarded as one of the most beautiful public gardens in America with one of the most unique visionary artist will always be a winning combination. Opening to the public in the 1940’s, Airlie Gardens has forever been connected to one of the most beloved visionary folk artist of our time. Minnie Evans created most of her art surrounded by the plethora of beauty that surrounded her while at work as the gate keeper.
In 2004, in honor of Minnie, a sculpture garden complete with one of the most beautiful “bottle houses” ever built was dedicated. Also featuring a fountain, copper sculptures and a pottery representation of her at the gate house, it has become a main attraction. Green Day is a celebration of all thing Minnie at the gardens. On Saturday the 13th, while combating a marathon run nearby and the ACC tournament, nearly 1000 visitors came out to celebrate. With art demonstrations, kid’s activities centered around art, live music including performers from Minnie’s church and a display of the largest collection of her art in the world, the day was one to be remembered. While Minnie died in the 1980’s, clearly her spirit lives in a very magical way.
She would be so proud to see the elements of her art recreated in the gardens she so dearly loved, the house she called home for much of her waking hours lovingly preserved. If you are in Wilmington next year during the month of March, check the Airlie Gardens website for the date as it is not to be missed.

Press Coverage -

I was one of over 30 member of the NC Folk Art Society to visit Wilmington April 24 weekend specifically to see the gardens that inspired Minnie Evans, one of the most important visionary artists of the twentieth century. We were all very surprised to learn Airlie could be sold by the County. I personally spent $175 …a night on a hotel and about $60 a day on food at local restaurants. The County Commissioners need to take into account both the historic, cultural and recreational resources at stake and the contribution to the local economy.
